“I started volunteering as a Spanish interpreter when I was in college, thinking of applying to medical school. This experience has given me invaluable insight into the medical profession and has given me the opportunity to help underprivileged Latinx patients I strongly identify with.”
April is National Volunteer Month! Our volunteers form the bedrock that supports every aspect of our unique delivery model. Through the altruistic spirit of our committed volunteers, we can provide high-quality primary, dental, and specialty care for those without access to essential health care.
Volunteers fulfill a wide range of roles at our health centers. Last year, a team of over 1,000 physicians, nurses, pharmacists, dentists, laboratory assistants, translators, triage, and administrative volunteers donated over 45,000 hours of their time, knowledge, and talent to CommunityHealth.
Our relationships with volunteers are mutually beneficial in a variety of ways. Working at our sites offers an abundance of training opportunities, including valuable experience working with underserved populations and exposure to an electronic medical records system. For many of our volunteers, simply raising the quality of life for our city’s struggling communities is the most rewarding benefit of all.
This month we are honoring our volunteers and the vital services they provide with some fun festivities! We’re holding trivia challenges each week with raffle prizes from local businesses. There will also be a movie showing of The Waiting Room on Tuesday, April 18th at 4:30 p.m. in the CommunityHealth conference room. And on Friday, April 28th from 5 to 7 p.m., we’re having Happy Hour at Haywood Tavern (2759 W Augusta Ave). Come enjoy drinks, available for purchase, with fellow volunteers and staff. Extra bonus: purchase of select beers will be direct donations to the clinic!
