Durbin: Healthcare Reform Must Move Forward for All Americans

Congress needs to respond to the public's call for comprehensive healthcare reform, U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) said today during a news conference at CommunityHealth Clinic.

"American families need the stability that a reformed healthcare system can offer: stable coverage that cannot be taken away regardless of what lies ahead; stable costs that won't leave them worrying how much more of their paychecks will be eaten away; stable quality so they can count on receiving the treatment they need, when they need it, and from the doctor they choose," Durbin said.

Sen. Durbin also stressed that "[h]ealth reform is not a Democratic issue or a Republican issue. This is an American issue and we need an American solution...."

CommunityHealth and Executive Director Judith Haasis Honored

2009 Managerial Excellence Award Given to CommunityHealth

On May 13, CommunityHealth received The Alford-Axelson Award for Managerial Excellence for organizations with annual budgets over $2.5 million. Executive Director Judith Haasis and Joseph O'Malley, board vice president, accepted the award from Zoraida Sambolin, Anchor, NBC's News Today, the emcee at the awards luncheon which was part of the 10th Annual Axelson Center Symposium for Nonprofit Professionals and Volunteers held on the campus of North Park University, Chicago. CommunityHealth, one of the six nonprofit award finalists, was singled out for embodying, among other key criteria of managerial excellence:

• A clear, compelling and well-communicated mission and vision
• Strategies in place that align programs and services to mission and goals
• Solid financial management
• Diversified funding
• An organizational culture informed by integrity
• A shared sense of purpose and values within the organization and among key external constituents
• Processes in place for evaluating organizational performance

Along with the award, CommunityHealth received a $5,000 gift made possible by
Chase and Shorebank.

CommunityHealth's Executive Director Receives IOMC Honor

Judith Haasis, Executive Director of CommunityHealth, was awarded the 2009 Henry P. Russe, MD Citation for Exemplary Compassion in Health Care at the Institute of Medicine Chicago's 94th Annual Meeting and Awards Dinner on May 4. The Institute of Medicine of Chicago (IOMC) and Rush University Medical Center established the award in honor of Henry P. Russe, MD who was Dean of Rush Medical College of Rush University Medical Center and served five terms as President of The Institute of Medicine of Chicago. This ongoing award is given to an individual who like Dr. Russe exemplifies a commitment to health care informed by the highest standards of excellence and humanitarianism. At the 2010 IOMC Annual Meeting, Judy will be returning to the podium to address members on a health-related topic of interest.
